Performance of the model with and without PSR feedback (vagotomy). Disconnection of PSR feedback in the model causes: (i) an increase in duration and amplitude of ramp-I neuron and phrenic discharges reflecting the loss of the Hering-Breuer inspiration-inhibiting reflex (Cohen 1979; Euler 1986; Feldman 1986); and (ii) a decrease in duration of the post-I neuron burst and postinspiratory phase (Richter et al. 1986). |
